1. Set your shared assumptions below — how many miles you'll drive per year, current gas/electricity prices, your state (for automatic tax/registration), and how many years you plan to keep each car. 2. Add your vehicles as tabs — click + Add vehicle, then fill in its name, type (EV/ICE), whether it's new or used (and its age if used), price, insurance, maintenance, and depreciation assumptions. Add as many as you want to compare. 3. Add any extra costs — tolls, parking, an extended warranty, whatever applies — with your own name, amount, and frequency. 4. Read the results below — a bar chart and full cost breakdown update live as you type, for every vehicle at once.
This is a rough planning estimate, not a quote. Real depreciation, insurance, and maintenance vary by specific make/model, your credit, your driving habits, your exact location, and market conditions at the time you actually buy or sell. Use this to compare options and sanity-check assumptions — then verify the numbers that matter most (insurance quote, real listing price, your state's exact fees) before making a decision.
Compare Car Cost of Ownership
A multi-vehicle cost-of-ownership calculator. Compare what any set of cars — new, used, gas, or electric — actually costs to own over time, once you count purchase price, depreciation, tax, registration, insurance, maintenance, fuel/energy, financing, and any extra costs you add. Depreciation is calibrated to KBB's published year-by-year schedule and iSeeCars' 2026 study of 950,000+ vehicles (44% average 5-year loss for gas, 57.2% for EVs).
What owning this car actually costs you in lost value — not the same as your monthly payment.
This total is what ownership actually costs after netting out resale value, whether you paid cash or financed. It is not the same as your monthly payment; loan principal isn't a cost (it builds equity you get back at resale), only interest, depreciation, and running costs are. See "Monthly Pocket Expense" below for the separate, budget-focused view of what actually leaves your wallet each month.
Monthly Pocket Expense, per vehicle
What actually leaves your bank account each month — a different question from the True Total Cost above.
Not "how much wealth does this cost me," but "how much leaves my bank account every month." It includes the loan payment in full (principal + interest) if financed, since that's real cash leaving your account even though part of it builds equity.

Tax and registration are calculated automatically from your selected state (or manual entry) and each vehicle's entered price and type. Depreciation defaults: front-loaded model uses ~13%/yr (yrs 0-2), ~9.5%/yr (yrs 2-5), ~5%/yr (5+) for ICE, and ~19%/13.5%/7% for EV — both calibrated to hit iSeeCars' actual 5-year totals (44% ICE, 57.2% EV) while following KBB's published front-loaded shape. A "flat rate" alternative is also offered per vehicle, spreading the same 5-year total evenly — real cars vary between these two shapes depending on model, segment, and demand, so treat both as reasonable bounds rather than a single truth. Financing assumes the loan term equals your holding period; if financed, the price you'd have paid in cash instead stays invested and is drawn down monthly to cover payments, so the investable balance shrinks over time.
